Covalent binding of drug metabolites to DNA ? a tool of predictive value?
1980
The presently available data suggest at least some correlation between covalent binding of drug metabolites to DNA and carcinogenicity of that drug. More data, however, are needed to establish the predictability of covalent DNA binding assays for extrahepatic cancer. A covalent binding assay requires administration of radioactively labelled compound to the experimental animals; the availability of labelled compound and requirements as to radiochemical purity, chemical and biochemical stability are limiting the applicability of this procedure. Many technical pitfalls accompany covalent DNA binding assays. It is concluded that at the present time DNA binding assays do not represent routine pr…
Standard testing of photovoltaic modules for use in renewable energy education
2015
A photovoltaic laboratory exercise has been devised and used in the educational curriculum of the Renewable Energy Programme at the University of Jyväskylä. The purpose of the experimental tasks is to give students of renewable energy a good understanding of standard testing procedures used in industry for characterising photovoltaic modules and to provide practical skills in sizing simple photovoltaic installations. Herein the experimental set-up, basic theory and measurement procedure are described. The experimental apparatus is simple to assemble and uses both standard laboratory equipment and recycled components. From the experimental results, the tested PV cell had a maximum efficiency…
Distance-based functions for image comparison
1999
The interest in digital image comparison is steadily growing in the computer vision community. The definition of a suitable comparison measure for non-binary images is relevant in many image processing applications. Visual tasks like segmentation and classification require the evaluation of equivalence classes. Measures of similarity are also used to evaluate lossy compression algorithms and to define pictorial indices in image content based retrieval methods. In this paper we develop a distance-based approach to image similarity evaluation and we present several image distances which are based on low level features. The sensitivity and eAectiveness are tested on real data. ” 1999 Published…
Orientation of galaxies in structures
2014
The investigation of the orientation of galaxies is a standard test concerning to scenarios of galaxy formation, because different theories of galaxy formation make various predictions regarding to the angular momentum of galaxies. The new method of analysis of the alignment of galaxies in clusters was proposed in the paper Godlowski (2012) and now is improved. We analyzed the distribution of the position angles of the galaxy major axes, as well as the distribution of two angles describing the spatial orientation of galaxy plane, which gives the information about galaxy angular momenta. We discuss the orientation of galaxies in groups and clusters of galaxies. The results show the dependenc…
Multispectral analysis of color vision deficiency tests
2011
Color deficiency tests are usually produced by means of polygraphy technologies and help to diagnose the type and severity of the color deficiencies. Due to different factors, as lighting conditions or age of the test, standard characteristics of these tests fail, thus not allowing diagnosing unambiguously the degree of different color deficiency. Multispectral camera was used to acquire the spectral images of the Ishihara and Rabkin pseudoisochromatic plates in the visible spectrum. Spectral data was converted to cone signals, and successive mathematics applied to provide a simple simulation of the test performance. Colorimetric data of the each pixel of the test image can be calculated an…
New techniques for visualization of losses due to image compression in grayscale medical still images
2003
To evaluate the visual influence of irreversible compression on medical images, changes of the images have to be visualized. The authors have explored alternative techniques to be used instead of the usual side-by-side comparison, where the information contained in both images is perceived in a single image, preserving the context between compression errors and image structures. Thus fast and easy comparison can be done. These techniques make use of the human ability to perceive information also in the dimensions of color, space, and time. A study was performed with JPEG-compressed coronary angiographic images. Changes in the resulting images for six compression factors from 7 to 30 were sc…
An Approximate Determinization Algorithm for Weighted Finite-State Automata
2001
Nondeterministic weighted finite-state automata are a key abstraction in automatic speech recognition systems. The efficiency of automatic speech recognition depends directly on the sizes of these automata and the degree of nondeterminism present, so recent research has studied ways to determinize and minimize them, using analogues of classical automata determinization and minimization. Although, as we describe here, determinization can in the worst case cause poly-exponential blowup in the number of states of a weighted finite-state automaton, in practice it is remarkably successful. In extensive experiments in automatic speech recognition systems, deterministic weighted finite-state autom…
Preventing early age chloride migration into low-carbon concrete
2019
The use of substituting cementitious materials (SCMs) to produce low-carbon concrete is escalating. This contributes to reducing the anthropogenic emission of CO2, and to reduce harmful temperature gradients during cement hydration in massive structures. Mature low-carbon concretes are known to perform well on both strength and durability. However, the maturity process is slow compared to that of standard concrete. Structures made from low-carbon concrete are subject to penetration of agents like chloride at early age, accelerating degrading processes. Chloride penetration is a major problem especially to infrastructure, due to seawater proximity and the use of de-icing agents. Solutions fo…
